MakeMKV is a format converter, otherwise called "transcoder". I held off asking this n00b question as long as I could stand it, but I give up now.MakeMKV is your one-click solution to convert video that you own into free and patents-unencumbered format that can be played everywhere. Nowhere in the MakeMKV program do I see a reference to "MPLS" or "Playlists", so I haven't a clue how to make use of the suggestions in this forum – such as "00619.mpls being correct" – when ripping challenging Blu-Ray discs. Thought I had earned my "Advanced Mode" badge, guys - backed up dozens of DVD and BD before! - but I admit defeat with "Bombshell (2019)", and the Googlez aren't helping me thru this basic question. HOW DO I LEAD MAKEMKV TO THE "CORRECT" MAIN TITLE?īackground: Running latest rev. 1.15.0, I've got the disc in, I can "Open Disc." no sweat, I see no mention of Java (though it is installed correctly in Windows 10). the Titles get listed (showing # of Chapter(s), etc.), but saving the "biggest" (2.6GB) title nabs me the "Making of." which isn't the Main Title. This is where my mind fries: I don't know how to "knit" the contents into a working backup. THANKS FROM AN ADMITTED n00b WHO RTFM AND LOST. Many thanks, as I felt like a dork asking. Meanwhile, I've done my due diligence and scoured the Interwebz for more enlightenment on all things. Mpls, and have since (re)discovered things like Process Monitor (procmon) using it to find 'real' playlists the value of having a good player like VLC installed (although most tutorials seem to prefer PowerDVD for some reason?) backing up BD discs to HD in order to create/view/edit BDMV folders, etc. Kind of a steep learning curve for the average Joe, no question, but I will immerse myself further. Just was about to throw in the towel, or wouldn't have posted my whine earlier, lol. What series of button presses would I do in MakeMKV to "backup" the entirety of a BD to HD, anyway? (I'm assuming one begins by inserting the disc, and maybe turning off "Skip if shorter than _" by setting that to '0', but the actual workflow doesn't spring to mind. Yet it's often mentioned so cavalierly in the Forum.)Īgain, thanks(!) from this old-timer. Back when we watched everything on VHS and were happy to pay Blockbuster the extra $1 "rewind" fee!Īgain, thanks(!) from this old-timer.Before streaming was the primary way to get new content, I collected a lot of movies on DVD / bluray. I still have a large collection, but have been slowly converting it to be hosted on my Plex server. ![]() This gives me a Netflix like viewing experience, but for my own personal movie collection. Handbrake is great for dealing with DVDs. MakeMKV is how I rip bluray disks, then feed the resulting rip into Handbrake to compress it down. Handbrake will automatically select the longest video, and that’s almost always the actual movie itself. With MakeMKV that selection is more manual, but picking 1 title from a list of 10 isn’t all that hard. When I got to the Hunger Games series, things got a bit more interesting. Starting with Catching Fire the bluray shows you 100’s of feature length titles – all the same duration, but with different segment maps. It seems that all but one of these titles has things shuffled in the wrong order. Initially I naively picked the 1st and used that one, but upon watching the movie it was obvious there was 1 scene out of place, and thus two weird jump cuts to the flow of the movie. If you got digging around, you can find advice on which of the many to pick from the list. It turns out that there are multiple versions of the movie: rental, US release, Canadian release, etc.
